Turkey - Gateway to the Orient

April 2, 2001

Early in the morning, Shaykh Nazim leads the predawn prayers (tahajjud) followed by Salat al-Fajr and recitation of early morning tasbeeh and the Holy Names of Allah.

A Mevlevi Dervish, known as Dervish Mustafa, whirls to the chanting of tahlil, 'la ilaha ill Allah'.

After recitations are completed, Surat Ya Sin (Chapter 36 of the Holy Quran) is recited by Hafez Saheb Mahmood, as is done traditionally in many Muslim countries after Salat al-Fajr.

Shaykh Nazim then addressed the several hundred gathered mureeds for a dawn association (suhbat), followed by Salat al-Ishraq.

Followers then came turn-by-turn to greet the Naqshbandi Sufi master, reciting salawat in unison after which they greeted one another in turn.

The Shaykh heads down the tall hill on which the Zawiya is located in a crush of mureeds

The hills and fields of Turkey are blossoming with the buds of spring.
