ISCA congratulates Muslim community on successful Ramadan Stamp campaign
U.S. Postal Service to disclose stamp November 13, 2000
(Washington, DC 11/10/00) – The Islamic Supreme Council of America is honored to announce that the US Postal Service announced its approval of a stamp commemorating the Islamic holiday, Eid al-Fitr. Eid al-Fitr comes at the end of Ramadan, a month Muslims spend in fasting and worship.
This achievement marks the end of a successful campaign by the Islamic Supreme Council to encourage the issuance of a Ramadan stamp. We are grateful to the Muslim community, who participated with great avidity by flooding the Post Office with expressions of support.
Speaking from Durban, South Africa, ISCA Chairman Shaykh Hisham Kabbani stated, "We would like to thank Congressman Tom Davis (R-VA), Congressman Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) and the several other members of congress who worked toward this important milestone, and, of course, Mr. Henderson, Ms. Knolke and the members of the Citizen’s Stamp Advisory Committee for recognizing the significance of this stamp. We thank our staff and the staff of The Muslim Magazine for their dedicated work on this issue. We particularly thank the Muslim community, the mosques and the organizations who assisted the Council in implementing the massive grassroots campaign to make the Ramadan Stamp a reality. We salute all Muslims for this great achievement, and remind them that it was their hard work with ISCA that enabled us to achieve this goal, despite a number of obstacles. Alhamdulillah, our efforts have been successful."
ISCA would also like to recognize the outpouring of support from the interfaith community with whom we worked throughout the past two years. Many faith groups supported the idea of the stamp through their own mail campaigns, as a show of mutual respect for all religions. It is through displays of moderation and tolerance such as this that we may all work together for a common good.
We encourage members of the community to call or write the US Post Office to thank them for supporting this effort. Please visit the ISCA Web site for contact information.
